Mission Cataract USA is a nationwide program that links independent ophthalmologists across the country to provide cataract care to patients who otherwise could not afford it. The idea began in 1991 in Fresno, California when Dr. Frederick Richburg, an ophthalmologist, wanted to do mission cataract surgery, but didn’t have time to travel to a foreign country. Aware that people in our own country had needs for eye health care, Dr. Richburg decided to create a local mission right in his own backyard. That year, he and local volunteers screened over 150 people and he performed free cataract surgery for 21. In 1993, the program expanded nationwide with 112 clinics and hospitals and more than 280 eye surgeons providing free cataract surgery to more than 1,100 people nationwide. Mission Cataract was first performed in Southern Kentucky in 1995. This year hundreds of eye surgeons nationwide will perform free cataract surgeries for patients of all ages whose vision care is not covered by Medicare, Medicaid, third party insurance or their own incomes. Dr. John Downing, Dr. Dailey McPeak, Dr. Maria Garber and Dr. Jamie Monroe, staff members and volunteers in the community are all donating their time to provide the free care. Downing-McPeak Vision Centers got the news out with the help of churches, local media, clubs and organizations and local optometrists. "It’s a community effort," says Dr. Downing. "We appreciate all the volunteers who donate their time to help up provide this life changing surgery." |
