What are HIEs?   

While convenience is a big deal for patient care, HIEs offer more than just the ability to access medical information on the go. They’re becoming a critical part of everyday healthcare. With nearly 90% of U.S. healthcare providers using electronic medical records, these databases are here to stay.  

Despite garnering lots of attention with the recent implementation of the 21st Century Cures Act, HIEs have been around for more than 20 years. They’ve been instrumental in shifting healthcare from pencil-and-paper notes to digital information that can be accessed, processed, and distributed within the cloud. This not only makes it easier for providers to communicate with one another but minimizes the cost and improves the quality of information distributed to your fellow providers. 

But HIEs have a caveat—their complexity. Individual states fund their HIEs differently and set unique rules such as registration deadlines, onboarding fees, or patient ability to opt-out. In the U.S., each state has a separate HIE, and there are sometimes multiple within one state (for example, as of this writing, California has 15 regional HIEs and is working on a statewide database to tie them all together).
