News > Regulatory > Demystifying MIPS: 7 Frequently Asked Questions
From filing your taxes to figuring out Great-aunt Glenda’s birthday present, some things can be hard to navigate when they happen only once a year—especially if they involve lots of nuance. Reporting MIPS (Merit-based Incentive Payment System) is no exception, and with ever-evolving government regulations, it's important to stay on top of your game if you participate.
That's why we've created this handy guide to frequently asked questions about MIPS reporting in Eyefinity Encompass. While MIPS reporting comes but once a year, we recommend bookmarking this page so you can return to it should questions arise at any point.
1. Do I need to participate in MIPS?
Possibly. Participation in MIPS depends on how many Medicare patients you see annually. It's also dependent on the number of Medicare-covered professional services you provide each year and the cumulative billing amount for those services. Practices meeting some but not all criteria can opt in if they wish to participate, as illustrated below.
To see if your practice is required to participate in MIPS, use this participation lookup tool.
We also provide more details about MIPS participation on our Help Center page.
2. Where can I find what has changed in MIPS for the current year?
Our What's New page in our regulatory Help Center is a fantastic resource for all those nuances that shift year over year. Our dedicated regulatory team is constantly keeping a pulse on requirements and updating information as it becomes available. Be sure to check back frequently as deadlines approach, in addition to monitoring both federal and state regulations that may impact your practice. We also recommend joining your state optometric association, if you haven’t already, to stay in the know about requirements.
3. How do I report my MIPS Quality numbers to CMS/QPP?
Eyefinity Encompass™ users can take advantage of our built-in registry, which simplifies reporting by sending your data directly to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) right from the software. If you haven’t signed up for the registry yet, we strongly recommend doing so sooner rather than later, since there is higher demand for the registry around the annual reporting deadline in spring.
ExamWRITER users must manually upload reports to submit them and can find instructions here.
4. How do I sign up for Secure Messaging?
Eyefinity Encompass users can access Secure Messaging automatically within their software.
ExamWRITER users wishing to use Secure Messaging can find information about signing up here. Using this feature may require software updates.
5. How do I see my MIPS Quality Measures Report?
Viewing your Quality data is easy in Eyefinity software, but it depends on the solution you're using.
Eyefinity Encompass users: For instructions on viewing your Quality Measures Report, visit this page in our Help Center. You'll find instructions for navigating the dashboard, making selections that impact your MIPS score, and finding additional information in specific categories.
ExamWRITER users: For information on creating, viewing, running, and archiving Quality data reports, visit this page.
6. Why aren't all the Quality Measures available?
As with accessing reports and signing up for Secure Messaging, the availability of Quality Measures depends on which Eyefinity product you're using. Eyefinity Encompass uses clinical quality measures (CQMs) while ExamWRITER uses eCQMS (electronic clinical quality measures).
Additionally, there's limited availability of Quality measures relevant to the optical industry.
7. Why do I want my A1c measure to be less than 100%?
The A1c measure is an inverse standard. Think of it like a golf score—a lower calculated performance rate for this measure indicates better clinical care or control.
To find more information on A1c measures, visit this page, where you can select options for Eyefinity Encompass or ExamWRITER.
